Summertime is approaching, and it’s time to update your skin care routine! If you don’t already do this, I encourage you to switch out your heavier winter moisturizer for a lighter moisturizer for summer. Your skin is not the same in dry, cold weather as it is in humid, hot weather. To help you find a new moisturizer, I’m including a list of the best moisturizers for oily skin in the summertime (keep reading or scroll down for the list)!
To be honest, I dread hot weather most of the time unless I’m at the beach. A big reason I don’t like it is that I sweat a lot and my face gets so oily. The combination of sweat and oil just makes my acne go crazy. I’ve purchased SO many moisturizers over the years, and I’ve learned that I can’t just buy whatever “oil-free” stuff is available.
I learned that I need to give my skin proper hydration and moisture, otherwise my skin will compensate by producing more oil! I realized my skin was oily but dehydrated. Yes, it’s possible to be both! Believe me, you need to moisturize oily skin. This is coming from someone who would skip moisturizer because I was scared my skin would be more oily. Now I embrace moisturizer!
What to Look for in a Moisturizer for Oily Skin
There are some skin-loving ingredients that I look for when I’m shopping for a new moisturizer! Here are some of them.
Hyaluronic acid: The loss of water content contributes to the aging process of skin. This is where hyaluronic acid helps a lot! Hyaluronic acid can hold a HUGE amount of moisture which benefits ALL skin types!
Antioxidants: There are a variety of antioxidants in moisturizers, but one of my favorites is green tea! Green tea helps with skin repair, wrinkles, repairing sun damage, and is naturally anti-bacterial (bye, zits!).
Fruit extracts: These are naturally filled with so many skin-friendly ingredients from vitamins, antioxidants, to acids that give your skin a brighter tone and smoother texture! The moisturizers below include everything from watermelon extract to lemon extract!
What You Don’t Want in a Moisturizer for Oily Skin
Here are some ingredients I avoid if possible. Always check the label!
Sulfates SLS and SLES: These ingredients can be irritating to the skin in high enough concentrations. You may have heard that they are also carcinogenic (cancer-causing), but there is a lot of research now to support that they are NOT carcinogenic.
Alcohol: Many moisturizers actually contain alcohol. Don’t want to dry out that skin!
Parabens: These are preservatives that are “endocrine-disrupting chemicals can be absorbed through skin, blood and the digestive system,” according to The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics.
Phthalates: This is common in products with synthetic fragrances. They have been “linked to endocrine disruption, developmental and reproductive toxicity, and cancer.” Definitely try to avoid this one.
Petrolatum, beeswax, mineral oil, and paraffin: These are occlusives, which basically block off the pores of your skin so it can’t breathe! For me, this just screams zit city.
Best Moisturizers for Oily Skin Under $15
Yes, it’s listed for dry skin, but this oil-free moisturizer is wonderful for oily skin too. It’s packed with hyaluronic acid! I don’t use drugstore moisturizers too often, but I finished a whole jar of this one! The texture feels smooth and moist without too much stickiness. It’s fragrance-free too!
L’Oreal’s latest skin care products really impress me. This is a liquid moisturizer that is oil-free and contains hyaluronic acid and aloe. I can see this being a super popular drugstore brand moisturizer!
This is a popular Korean moisturizer that contains mineral-rich seawater, and 30 different marine plant extracts! It also has hyaluronic acid.
Best Moisturizers for Oily Skin Under $30
The Philosophy Purity line is a solid collection of products. I like their Purity cleanser so when I saw this, I knew it would be a good addition! Philosophy calls this an “ultra-light” moisturizer that will keep your skin glowy and hydrated for 24 hours…and the reviews tend to agree! The ingredients are non-comedogenic too!
I’ve been a fan of the GinZing line for a while, and I was happy when they released a lighter, gel version of their moisturizer! I love the light citrusy fragrance of the essential oils.
Best Moisturizers for Oily Skin Over $35
I’ve repurchased this moisturizer multiple times and I think it’s a great option for everyday use. This provides lightweight hydration with antioxidants and natural fruit acids to nourish skin and improve skin tone and texture. It is oil-free.
This is a great option for applying under makeup. The matte finish will help keep shine at bay! The great skin ingredients include green tea, marine extracts, yeast extracts and burdock root which are anti-acne, skin-repairing and oil-fighting. This may not be moisturizing enough for those with combination-oily skin, and you may want to layer with something else underneath. If you’re super oily all over, this might be a good choice!
This is my latest moisturizer obsession! It has a lovely serum-gel consistency that feels light. I love patting it on my face because it’s so refreshing. Nothing like watermelon in the summertime! It’s packed with hyaluronic acid and antioxidants from fruit extracts. Check out my detailed review of this moisturizer and its sister product, the cult favorite Watermelon Sleeping Mask!
One of my tried and true favorites…I’ve repurchased this many times! The first time I used it, I could not believe this oil-free gel-cream could give me so much hydration without loading my skin down with heavy, oily moisturizers! I was hooked right then. Try it, you’ll Belif it (haha). The Korean skin care hype is real!
This Japanese moisturizer is pricier, but if you want to treat yourself, this is oil-free gel-cream is wonderful! Even though it is technically a cream, the texture is light and absorbed really well into the skin. No greasy residue! It wears well under makeup. It contains a lot of skin-benefiting ingredients like green tea, rice, and algae as well as Japanese Leopard Lily and Japanese Wild Rose. Plus, the packaging is so pretty!
